Thanks to the studies carried out over several years on the San Martín stump monkey and its habitat, in 2022 we began to implement a pilot ecological restoration project in the ZoCRE Morro de Calzada (1,250 hectares), which seeks to contribute to the reestablishment of connectivity and richness of the habitat of this species, the maintenance of ecosystem services and, consequently, the well-being of local people. Until 2023 we have restored x ha of forest, with more than 3000 plants established around 5 demonstration plots.
To carry out this project we have the support of the District Municipality of Calzada, with whom we have been coordinating since 2009 in favor of sustainable management of the Morro de Calzada protected area.
Why this initiative?
Morro de Calzada has a population of more than a thousand stump individuals, being an important area for the protection of this species in Alto Mayo. Likewise, this area has areas deforested and degraded by man, affecting the quality of habitat for the stump monkey and fauna in general.
What is habitat restoration?
It consists of the recovery of the original ecosystem that has been intervened seeking to maintain the functions of the forest so that it continues to offer resources such as water, air, climate regulation and protection against climate change.
Our restoration project involves a process that begins with the characterization of the forest to know the key species of vegetation to work with, the production of seedlings from different treatments for the collected seeds, the planting selecting degraded areas of Morro de Calzada and monitoring and evaluation of them, a constant work that includes different treatments that allow the plants to mature optimally.
At the Municipal Nursery of Calzada we carry out the work of treating native seeds, germination and transfer in repique beds.
What do we expect?
Have a pilot ecological restoration model to recover deforested areas and enrich the degraded areas of Morro de Calzada in order to improve the quality of the habitat of the stump monkey and fauna in general, contributing to the maintenance of ecosystem services.
Let's take back the stump monkey's home!
